The writer takes the reader on his/her heartbreaking journey of loss and that of what will never be. His/her life a broken tart, pieces of a sweet delicacy of what was once his/her life. As the writer realizes he/she is not just a spectator in this world but in fact a player as well, the reader journeys with him/her into the land of hope. For both the writer and reader come to realize that even a “marshmallow” heart is a heart nonetheless, capable of putting up a strong fight in the face of FA, cancer, dementia, or life in general. The marshmallow heart is a metaphorical representation of life with FA, dementia, or cancer. While it appears gooey and a monotonous white on the outside, the marshmallow is able to deliver the most surprising and sweetest taste at.
