Life expectancy in Friedreich’s ataxia

The majority of patients start using a wheelchair within 10 to 20 years of the onset of their first symptoms. Those who are affected may become incapacitated later in the disease. However, some individuals with less severe signs of Friedreich’s ataxia condition live into their sixties or later. Heart disease is the leading cause of death.
